Year 5

In Year Five we have a new teacher called Miss Alderson. She is funny like our old teacher.

We have been discovering facts all about Ancient Egypt. We made: biscuits for Tutankhamun; and Top Trump cards based on the gods and goddesses

In Literacy, we wrote a diary about going to Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. We had to think about the writing skills needed to compose a diary extract. We used some fantastic power adjectives, as well as snappy and complex sentences.

In maths, we have been exploring column addition, multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 and applying these skills to word problems based on Ancient Egypt. We have also been using calculators and we discovered that not only can we use them for sums, but we can make words by turning the calculators upside down. We even managed to complete a story!

Mr Callaghan visits Year Five every Tuesday to teach science. This half term he has been helping us to understand forces. We have been looking at forces around us, including gravity, up-thrust, water and air resistance.

We are so fortunate to go swimming on a Wednesday afternoon at Thornes Park, with Miss Alderson and Mrs Kaye. We have three different gfroups, who all try their best to improve their swimming.
We have lots of fun and a wonderful time in Year Five. We learn a lot!
